Delaware and Raritan Canal

145 Mapleton Road, Princeton, NJ 08540

609-924-5705

The Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal is a 70-mile linear park that encompasses 5 counties and 22 municipalities. It is one of Central New Jersey’s most popular recreational corridors for canoeing, kayaking, running, hiking, biking, fishing, and horseback riding. The canal and park are part of the National Recreation Trail System and the East Coast Greenway. Most of the original nineteenth-century canal system remains intact today and is a reminder of the days when freight delivery depended upon a team of mules and steam-powered boats. Historic structures and small towns dot the canal route as it runs parallel to the Delaware River and across central New Jersey. The canal passes through historic New Jersey towns such as Frenchtown, Stockton, Lambertville, Titusville, Trenton, and Bordentown, skirting past Princeton and on through the villages of Kingston, Griggstown, Blackwells Mills, East Millstone, and South Bound Brook before ending in New Brunswick. In 1973, the D&R Canal and many of its historic structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places; a year later it became a New Jersey State Park.
