Atsion Mansion

744 Route 206, Shamong, NJ 08088

609-268-0444

Atsion Mansion was built in 1826 as a summer home for Samuel Richards, a prominent ironmaster from Philadelphia. In addition to operating Atsion’s furnace and forge, Richards was known for throwing lavish parties attended by other wealthy and prominent families in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After Richards died in 1842, the property passed to his heirs. In 1862, Atsion was sold to Colonel Willaim Patterson, who reimagined the town as a planned agricultural community named “Fruitland.” It was again sold in 1871, this time to Maurice Raleigh, who reverted its name back to Atsion. The Raleigh family were also the last to use Atsion Mansion as a residence. When Joseph Wharton purchased the property in 1892, he used the mansion for packing and storing cranberries grown in nearby bogs. The State of New Jersey acquired Atsion in 1955.

Today, Atsion Mansion is restored to its 1826 appearance and stands as one of New Jersey’s most notable examples of the Vernacular Greek Revival architectural style. It was never modernized to include plumbing or electricity.
