Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park

37 Christie Street, Edison, NJ 08818

732-549-3299

The Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park was built to honor the memory of Thomas A. Edison and educate the public about his significant accomplishments at the site, as well as his impact on modern research and development. Thomas Edison is responsible for many of the technologies that make modern life modern. By the time of his death in 1931, he held 1,093 patents covering the creation or refinements of devices in telegraphy and telephony, electric power generation and lighting, sound recording, motion pictures, and more. Although Edison established research and manufacturing facilities in several locations, Menlo Park is the only place where a tradition of commemoration has become established. For almost 90 years, Edison’s colleagues and admirers from across America and around the world have singled out Menlo Park as the place to build monuments and pay respects to his memory.

Located in Edison Township and within Edison State Park, the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park consists of the Art Deco Edison Memorial Tower built in 1937 and a small museum and education center. Visitors can engage with original artifacts related to Edison’s major inventions at Menlo Park, such as a model of his laboratory, 100+ year old phonograph recordings, and historic lightbulbs and photographs. Visitors can even partake in hands-on demonstrations, like becoming a human battery to learn about parallel and series circuits! After a visit to the museum, visitors can also enjoy a walk along the nature trail that runs through the surrounding 36-acre state park.
