Often compared to Charels Lindbergh, this Mexican aviator’s life and legacy is memorialized inside Wharton State Forest.

In 1928, Mexican aviator Captain Emilio Carranza Rodríguez was selected to undertake a goodwill flight from Mexico City to New York City in response to American aviator Charles Lingbergh’s 1927 flight between the neighboring countries. Carranza became an international hero in June 1928 when he safely arrived in New York City to great fanfare and acclaim. Tragically, while flying back to Mexico in July 1928, his plane was caught in a thunderstorm over the New Jersey Pine Barrens and crashed in the forest. Captain Carranza did not survive. A 12’ monument is now located in Wharton State Forest, marking the site of his crash and celebrating his mission of international respect and cooperation.
