The Robert Shackleton Playhouse in historic downtown Cape May began its life in 1853 as the Cape Island Presbyterian Church, constructed by local builder Peter Hand at the corner of Lafayette and Bank Streets. Over the decades, this stately structure served multiple congregations—including Methodist and Episcopal communities—and evolved into a central gathering place for the town. In the mid-20th century, it even functioned as Cape May’s Welcome Center, narrowly escaping demolition in the 1950s when plans called for it to be replaced with a parking lot.
In 1994, the historic building entered a new chapter when it became the home of Cape May Stage, transforming the former church into an intimate performance venue. A major restoration completed in 2008 modernized the space while preserving its architectural character, including its unique acoustics shaped by the original apse. Named for Broadway and London actor Robert Shackleton, the playhouse is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a vibrant cultural hub—blending its rich architectural past with a dynamic present as a professional theater welcoming audiences year-round.
